Julie Adams, la sirena que fascinó a la criatura
Dama del fantástico y última heroína de los monstruos clásicos de la Universal, hoy junto al equipo completo de nuestra web nos ponemos de pie para entrevistar a la eterna Julie Adams.
— En su trayectoria cinematográfica ha interpretado diversos roles femeninos, desde mujeres desvalidas hasta aguerridas heroínas que luchan hasta el final sin darse por vencidas, ¿Qué opina del actual rol de la mujer en los films de este nuevo siglo?
— Es hermoso apreciar que los roles de la mujer han evolucionado en partes más interesantes
que meramente damiselas en apuros. Disfrutré mucho de interpretar a
Kay Lawrence porque era una científica que solo tenía un interés en el Gill Man, pero
que, al final de la película, genuinamente se preocupaba por él.
— ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de filmar Valley of Mistery con Fernando Lamas y Peter Graves (nuevamente en un ambiente selvático y hostil)?
— Fue muy excitante trabajar junto a actores
tan talentosos. Esa película tenía un reparto
maravilloso, y siempre es un placer
trabajar junto a actores de semejantes kilates,
sea en la locación que fuera. Cuando
tienes que interpretar escenas con actores
realmente buenos, el filme mejora y todos
se sienten comprometidos para rendir lo
mejor de sí mismos.
— ¿Cuál consideras su mejor interpretación como actriz y por qué?
— Mi mejor interpretación fue la de Mary
Tyrone en una obra de Eugene O’Neill llamada Long Day’s Journey into Night, que la hice en un pequeño teatro de Los Ángeles
que solo tenía capacidad para
unos cientos de espectadores, pero fue
un papel desafiante de una mujer en
un complicado entorno familiar. Para
mí fue un personaje muy emotivo. Me
gusta actuar en teatro porque te permite
una conexión diferente y viva con
los espectadores.
— ¿Cuál fue el galán que más recuerdas?
— Realmente disfruté mucho de trabajar
junto a Jimmy Stewart. Era un tipo
muy encantador y un tremendo buen
actor. Tuve la gran fortuna de coprotagonizar
junto a él en Bend of the River (Arg: Horizonte lejano / Esp: Horizontes lejanos-
1952) y, muchos años después, volvimos a compartir cartel en su serie de
televisión, The Jimmy Stewart Show.
— Premios como el Golden Boot y reconocimientos como el del Salón de la fama de artistas de Arkansas, el premio de Cinecon en 2011, el Premio Rondo por el Salón de la fama de Monster Kid en el Wonderfest anual en Louisville, Kentucky. Más el reconocimiento y el afecto de sus fans en todo el mundo son parte de sus muchos logros en su carrera cinematográfica y televisiva, ¿Soñaba con todo esto desde su infancia?
— De niña recuerdo que quería ser actriz de Hollywood. Solía mirar las películas, en mi Arkansas natal, y soñaba con trepar a la pantalla y vivir la excitante vida de los
artistas de cine. Me siento muy afortunada de que aquel sueño de convertirme en
actriz haya podido hacerse realidad.
— Bien, la pregunta inevitable: Por favor podría contarnos algo acerca de su mejor día de filmación de El monstruo de la laguna negra?
— Para mí el mejor día fue cuando hicimos la escena de natación. Tal y como un montón
de fans de la película, mi momento favorito es cuando Kay nada y la Criatura la
observa desde el fondo. En aquella época me encantaba nadar, así que cualquier oportunidad para nadar en horas laborales era para mí una experiencia memorable.
— Para concluir, nuestros lectores querrían conocer tu reflexión acerca
de tu carrera como actriz, de los talentosos artistas que has conocido
y de los grandes momentos que has vivido?
— Soy una mujer que persiguió todo lo que quería en su vida: ser actriz de cine. He tenido el privilegio de trabajar con un montón
de gente maravillosa a lo
largo de todos estos
años, incluyendo leyendas
como Elvis Presley y
John Wayne, lo que es increíble.
Me siento muy feliz de
haber podido vivir la vida que soñé.
La biografía
En 2011 Julie se autopublicó su biografía
(atención, a tomar nota: en el Imperio del Gran Norte los emprendimientos independientes
también funcionan), titulada The Lucky
Southern Star: Reflections from The Black Lagoon.
Escrita junto a su hijo Mitch Danton, la
premisa que les guió fue dar a conocer al público
que la carrera de Julie no se relegaba
meramente a un filme famoso y que además
del imponente Gill Man había tenido de partenaire
a actores inmortales como Rock Hudson,
William Powell, Charlton Heston, Van
Heflin y hasta el rey Elvis Presley. Aún así, Julie reconoce “algunos personajes cobran vida propia. La
Criatura aun camina entre nosotros”. El libro, con el testimonio de la actriz, fotografías de su colección
personal y miríadas de anécdotas, asume categoría de impostergable.
— In your film career, you has played many roles, from helpless women to heroines who struggle to the end without giving up. What do you think about the role of the women in yesterday movies and today?
— It is nice to see the roles of women evolving and playing more interesting parts than damsels in distress or housewives. I enjoyed playing Kay Lawrence because she was a scientist who had an interest in the Gill Man. By the end of the film she genuinely cares about him.
— How was filming Valley of Mystery with Fernando Lamas and Peter Graves? (again in a jungle and hostile environment.)
— It was exciting working with such fine actors. That film had such a wonderful cast, it’s always a pleasure to work with people of that calibre regardless of the location. When you play scenes with really good actors, it makes the film better, and challenges everyone to do their best work.
— What do you consider your best performance as actress and why?
— My best performance was as Mary Tyrone in a play by Eugene O’Neill called Long Day’s Journey into Night. I performed it at a small theater in Los Angeles that only held a few hundred people, but it was a challenging role about a woman in a troubled family. It was very emotional for me to play the part. I liked working in theater because of the connection with a live audience.
— Which was the leading man that you remember best and why?
— I really enjoyed working with Jimmy Stewart. He was a very nice man and a terrific screen actor. I had the good fortune to work with him in the film Bend of the River and we worked together again many years later in his television series The Jimmy Stewart Show.
— Golden Boot award, Cinecon 2011 award, Rondo award… besides the appreciation and affection from your fans from all over the world (even here, in Argentina), all are part of your many achievements in your movie and TV career. Did you dreamed of this as a child?
— I wanted to be a Hollywood actress since I was a child. I used to watch films as a young girl in Arkansas and dreamed of climbing into the screen and living an exciting life like the actors in the films I loved. I feel very lucky that my dream of becoming an actress actually came true!
— The unavoidable question: Could you tell us something about your best day of filming the classic Creature from the Black Lagoon?
— I really enjoyed the day when we did the swimming scene. Like many fans of the film, it is my favorite moment when Kay swims with the Creature below her in the water. I loved swimming in those days, so to have an opportunity to swim while working on a film was a memorable experience.
— To end this interview we would like some reflection or comment about your career as an actress and the people you met and the good times you have lived.
— I am a woman who went after what she wanted in life: to be an actress in the movies. To have the privilege of working with so many wonderful people over the years as well as legends like Elvis Presley and John Wayne is still hard to believe. I’m very happy that I was able to live the life I dreamed.
The biography
In 2011 Julie self-published her biography, titled The Lucky Southern Star: Reflections from The Black Lagoon. Written with her son Mitch Danton, the basis that guided them was to make known to the public that Julie's career was not merely relegated to a famous film and besides the imposing Gill Man, she had had immortal actors as partners like Rock Hudson, William Powell, Charlton Heston, Van Heflin and even the king Elvis Presley. Still, Julie acknowledges “some characters take on a life of their own. The Creature still walks among us.” The book, with the testimony of the actress, photographs of her personal collection and myriad of memories, is a must.
