Joshua Kennedy y The House of the Gorgon
Entrevistamos en exclusiva a Joshua Kennedy, con motivo del final de rodaje y próximo estreno de "The House of the Gorgon", y conversamos con las divas eternas de Hammer Films, Veronica Carlson, Martine Beswicke y Caroline Munro. Un regalo de Halloween para nuestros lectores.
Joshua Kennedy es un joven realizador oriundo de los Estados Unidos que ya posee una nutrida filmografía exclusivamente compuesto por películas fantásticas e independientes, producidas por su sello Goeey Film Productions. Enamorado del cine de terror clase B y de los clásicos de la Hammer, sus películas son homenajes entrañables y parodias a la vez. Hace unos años filmó The Night of Medusa (2016), sobre una joven estudiante neoyorquina poseída por el espíritu de una gorgona. Volviendo a la misma temática pero dándole una ambientación gótica a su realización, Joshua se propone lanzar su largometraje más ambicioso hasta la fecha, House of the Gorgon cuyo elenco está encabezado por cuatro legendarios intérpretes de las películas de la Hammer: Veronica Carlson, Martine Beswicke, Caroline Munro y Christopher Neame. Gracias a la generosidad de Joshua, pudimos enviar nuestras preguntas a las divas de la Hammer y también a Georgina Dugdale, protagonista femenina de House of the Gorgon.

Sinopsis: Es 1896, la adorable Isobel Banning viaje junto a su madre Anna hacia la aldea de Carlstadt donde contraerá matrimonio con su novio, el Dr. Julian Pritchard. A lo largo del viaje se encuentran con el misterioso padre Llewellyn, párroco local, que titubea al tratar de explicar el motivo por el cual los habitantes viven en pánico mortal... como si el pueblo ocultara un terrible secreto. Atemorizadas, Isobel y Anna aceptan la invitación del Dr. Pritchard para alojarse en el castillo de su tía, la Baronesa Bartov, sin saber del antiguo horror que se oculta tras sus muros.
—¿Cómo descubriste tu amor por el cine de la Hammer?
—Mi madre es una notable amante del cine y me permitió ver Drácula (1958) antes de yo cumplir los cinco años de edad y eso definitivamente me puso en órbita. ¡Creo que podría decirse que me corrompieron a corta edad!
—En The Return of Sherlock Holmes tú rindes homenaje a La aventura de los seis Napoleones. De los incontables intérpretes que interpretaron al ilustre detective, ¿cuál es tu favorito?
—¡Oh, esa pregunta es muy difícil de responder! O sea, para ser honesto, Peter Cushing en The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959). Está sublime. Pero claro, él siempre está sublime. Basil [Rathbone] le seguiría inmediatamente. ¡Gah! ¿Cómo elegir uno!
—En The Alpha Omega Man vemos influencias de The Last Man on Earth (1964), con Vincent Price, con algo de George A. Romero y algunos momentos paródicos (en particular, me encantó la secuencia de los héroes volando en bicicleta). ¿Podrías darnos una definición de tu spropio estilo cinematográfico?
—¡Ha! Sabes, realmente había planeado que ese vuelo fuera en motocicleta pero de pronto me di cuenta que no tenía licencia para conducir motos, ¡y tampoco tenía motocicleta! Era mucho más práctico y seguro conducir una bicicleta. Y respecto a mi propio estilo cinematográfico, jeez, no estoy muy seguro. Siempre espero hacer películas que me interesen, eso activa mi imaginación. Tal vez mis películas puedan catalogarse como relatos de hadas salpimentados con referencias y caramelito en barra. ¡Ha, ha!
—¿Cuáles son tus realizadores preferidos?
—Me cuesta mucho no disfrutar de una película o de un realizador. Algunos directores que primero me vienen a la mente: Terence Fisher, Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet, Billy Wilder, Orson Welles, Edward D. Wood Jr... me gusta todo.
—¿Por qué elegiste The Gorgon para hacer una secuela, House of the Gorgon?
—Es que The Gorgon (1964) es mi película favorita de todos los tiempos. House of the Gorgon no es una secuela o una remake, sino una historia completamente diferente que ocurre en el entorno de las hermanas gorgonas. Abundan las referencias a The Gorgon, así como referencias a los clásicos de la Hammer o del horror gótico.
—Para esta nueva producción tú cuentas con cuatro figuras de Hammer Films. ¿Qué es lo que más admiras de estas cuatro beldades que tendrás la oportunidad de dirigir? Y también cuéntanos algo sobre el señor Christopher Neame y Georgina Dugdale.
—Trabajar con estas estrellas es un sueño hecho realidad. Crecí mirando a estas actrices en VHS. Georgina Dugdale, que interpreta a la heroína, es realmente la hija de Caroline Munro, así que tener a madre e hija en el mismo set de filmación es sublime. Me dieron muchos nervios de trabajar con Christopher Neame, ya que es uno de mis intérpretes favoritos y tiene una gran presencia en la pantalla, pero una vez que nos pusimos a charlar descubrí que era tan genial como un teddy. Todas las actrices también lo son, la personas más amables, profesionales que jamás conocí. Si se anuncian en alguna convención cerca de ustedes, no lo duden, vayan a conocerlas, son todas angelicales.
—El diseño de arte del afiche es sorprendente, porque recrea perfectamente el estilo visual de los años '60 y '70. ¿Qué artista lo ilustró?
—Graham Humphreys, artista británico. Un tipo bárbaro y trabajar con él también fue un sueño hecho realidad. ¡Es que su estilo es sobresaliente!
—¿Crees que hay un redescubrimiento de los filmes de la Universal y la Hammer por parte de las nuevas generaciones de realizadores? ¿Hay esperanza para el cine de terror clásico en este atribulado siglo XXI?
—Estas películas hoy, en esta era tecnológica, están mucho más accesibles que nunca. La gente puede verlas en streaming en Youtube o comprarlas en Bluray. Y con una película como The Shape of Water que ha ganado el Oscar a Mejor Película... definitivamente hay esperanza y mucha para el cine de terror clásico en el mundo moderno.

—House of the Gorgon revivirá el espíritu gótico de la Hammer Films. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de filmar en esta nueva producción?
—Sí, House of the Gorgon es un gran homenaje a Hammer Films y a todo lo gótico. Nos divertimos mucho. Se filmó bajo un ajustado cronograma en una semana pero trabajamos duro y disfrutamos bastante del proceso. Me encantaría hacer una nueva performance con Josh Kennedy, nuestro joven director norteamericano de 24 años... y por supuesto con nuestro sorprendente equipo de brillantes y talentosos intérpretes.
—¿Cómo fue trabajar con las estrellas de la Hammer Martine Beswicke, Veronica Carlson y Christopher Neame... y con tu propia hija?
—¡Créanlo o no, nosotras nunca habíamos trabajado juntas! No se dan una idea de lo fabuloso que resultó trabajar con estas sorprendentes damas, todas diferentes y todas fabulosas. Reunirme con Christopher Neame, que esta vez hace de bueno, fue emocionante y trabajar con mi hermosa hija fue la frutilla del postre. Ella es tan buena en su personaje, da una gran presencia en cámara y la cámara la adora. Sé que estoy siendo parcial pero ella lo merece. ¡Deseo que el film sea un éxito! Espero que cada espectador disfrute con la visión de Josh, un hermoso guiño a la época de la Hammer en que yo comencé mi carrera actoral.

—¿Cómo fue trabajar junto a tu madre como la diabólica gorgona que trata de matarte?
—Para mí fue realmente muy especial ver a mi madre en su elemento y hasta tener la posibilidad de actuar con ella. ¡Realmente vi su transformación al ponerse en personaje! Quienquiera que conozca a mi madre sabe que es la persona más adorable, pero usualmente las personas más adorables tienen también su lado "maléfico". Mis hermanas también estuvieron en el set: Iona ayudó con el vestuario y Tami cumplió el rol de productora. ¡Realmente fue un asunto familiar! El líder de esta sorprendente troupe fue Joshua Kennedy, nuestro director. Como otros grandes, la visión de Josh era tan fuerte y creativa que, espero, cada uno que vea la película disfrutará tanto como nosotras al interpretarla. Trabajamos duro pero reimos y tuvimos mucha diversión.

—Joshua Kennedy, director de House of the Gorgon, te conoció en una Monster Bash. ¿Cómo te persuadió para regresar al cine de tu retiro?
—¡Fue una decisión sencilla para mí! Lo conocí hace cinco años y hemos hecho varios video clips muy divertidos desde entonces. Nos hicimos muy amigos y, cuando me lo propuso, ni siquiera lo dudé, especialmente porque me brindaba la posibilidad de actuar junto a mis adorables Caroline Munro, Veronica Carlson y Christopher Neame. ¡Y hasta con la hija de Caroline, Georgina Dugdale!
—¿Cómo fue tu experiencia durante el rodaje de House of the Gorgon, junto a estas grandes figuras de la Hammer?
—Hay una sola palabra para describir esa experiencia: MÁGICA. ¡Amé absolutamente cada minuto y estoy muy ansiosa de poder asistir a la premiere en Londres!

—¿Cómo fue filmar House of the Gorgon?
—Absolutamente sorprendente... siempre quise trabajar con Caroline y Martine. Joshua Kennedy es un joven remarcable. Un gurú creativo... su energía y entusiasmo son ilimitados. Nunca olvidé las "cuatro hojas" que Josh usó en una de las tomas... estas hojas las había recogido personalmente Josh en Black Park, en Inglaterra, cuando era chico y las usó en determinada escena. Su reverencia para estos detalles me demostró la devoción que profesa por la Hammer. House of the Gorgon es la experiencia que siempre quise.
—House of the Gorgon es un tributo a las películas de la Hammer. Habiendo actuado en sus películas, ¿cómo se compara éste rodaje con aquellos?
—La verdad es que no se pueden comparar. Hammer tenía la ventaja de contar con sets de filmación y elementos de producción... House of the Gorgon cuenta con la misma atmósfera y es para admirar que Josh pudiera recrearla con los materiales que contaba... su imaginación no tiene fronteras.

Sinopsis: The year is 1896 and the lovely Isobel Banning travels with her mother Anna to the village of Carlstadt to marry her university sweetheart Dr. Julian Pritchard.
Along their journey they meet the mysterious Father Llewellyn, the local priest, who refuses to explain why the villagers appear to be in a state of mortal fear... as if the town is hiding a terrible secret.
Frightened and confused, Isobel and Anna readily accept an invitation from Dr. Pritchard to stay with him and his aunt, the Baroness Bartov, in their large chateau overlooking the town... unaware of the ancient horror that lies within.
—How did you discover your taste for Hammer films?
—My mom is an enormous movie aficionado and showed me (Horror of) Dracula (1958) before I was five years old, and that definitely got the ball rolling. I guess you could say I was corrupted at a very young age!
—In The Return of Sherlock Holmes you pay homage to the Six Napoleons adventure. Of the many actors who have played the role of the illustrious detective, which one is you favorite?
—Oh, that is very difficult to answer! I mean, if I have to be honest, Peter Cushing in Hound of the Baskervilles (1959). He is sublime. But then again, he is sublime in everything. Basil would be a close second. Gah! How can one choose??
—In The Alpha Omega Man we see influences from The Last Man on Earth (1964), starred Vincent Price, with something of George Romero and spoof moments (I particularly liked the sequence of the heroes fleeing by bicycle).Would you give a definition of what’s your own cinematographic style?
— Ha! You know, I actually planned to ride a motorcycle in the scene, but I soon realized that I didn’t have a motorcycle license, and I didn’t have a motorcycle! It would be much safer to ride a bicycle.
As to my own cinematographic style – jeez – I’m not sure. I always hope to make films that interest me, that activate my imagination. I guess you could call my movies: Reference-laden fairy tale candy bars? HAHA.
—Who are you favorite filmmakers?
—It takes a lot for me not to enjoy a film or filmmaker. Some directors that pop to mind: Terence Fisher, Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet, Billy Wilder, Orson Welles, Edward D. Wood Jr… I’m all over the place with my tastes.
—Why did you choose The Gorgon to do a sequel or recreation, House of the Gorgon?
—Well, The Gorgon (1964) is my favorite film of all time. House of the Gorgon is also not a sequel or remake, but a completely different story that just happens to revolve around the gorgon sisters. References to The Gorgon abound, though, as well as references to a whole slew of Hammer films and Gothic horror films.
—For this new production, you have four original stars of Hammer Films. What do you most admire about the three classic beauties that you have the opportunity to direct? Please tell us a word about Mr. Christopher Neame and Georgina Dugdale too.
—Working with all of these stars has been a dream come true – I grew up watching these performers on VHS! Georgina Dugdale, who plays the love interest, is actually Caroline Munro’s real-life daughter, so to have mother and daughter in the same film was otherworldy. I was most nervous about working with Christopher Neame, as he is one of my favorite actors and has such a powerful presence on screen, but once I got to talking with him I discovered he is as joyful as a teddy bear. All of them, really: They are all the nicest, most professional people you could ever meet. If they ever show up at a convention near you, please go meet them – they are all angels.
—The artwork is amazing, because perfectly recreates the visual style used in the 60’s and 70’s. Who was the artist who made it?
—Graham Humphreys – he’s an artist based in the UK. A really nice guy and a dream to work with. It also helps that his art is outstanding!
—Do you think there is a rediscovery of the Universal and Hammer films by a new generation of filmmakers? There is hope in this dizzy XXI Century for the classic horror genre?
—These films are now more accessibe than ever in today’s technoogical age. People can watch stream them on Youtube, order the blurays, etc. And with a film like The Shape of Water winning the Oscar for Best Picture … There is definitely hope for classic horror in the modern world.

—House of the Gorgon will revive the gothic spirit of the Hammer films. How was the experience filming that production?
—Yes, House of the Gorgon plays a big homage to Hammer film and all things gothic. We had so much fun. It was made on a tight schedule of one week,but we worked hard and enjoyed the process so much. I would love to do a repeat performance with Josh Kennedy, our young 24 year old American director… And of course our amazing team of brilliant and talented actors.
—How was it like working opposite Hammer stars Martine Beswicke, Veronica Carlson, Christopher Neame… AND your daughter?
—Believe it or not, none of us ladies had ever worked together before! I can’t tell you the joy it was to work with these amazing women: all different and all fabulous.To be reunited with Christopher Neame, who was “the goodie” this time, was such a thrill, and to work with my beautiful daughter was the icing on the cake. She is so good in this part - a great presence on camera and the camera loves her. I know I am biased, but she deserves it.I do wish the film all the best! I hopeeveryone that sees it enjoys being immersed in Josh’s vision - a perfect nod to the Hammer age in which I began my acting journey!

—How was it like working with your mother as the evil Gorgon trying to kill you?
—It really was so special to see my mom in her element and even get to act opposite her. I really saw her transform into her character! Anyone who has met my mum knows shes the most loveable person, but usually the loveliest people make the best “baddies”. My sisters were on set too: Iona helped with wardrobe, and Tami played a huge role as producer and all-around amazing go-getter - it really was a family affair! The leader of this amazing troupe was Joshua Kennedy, our director. Like other greats, Josh’s vision was so strong and creative and hopefully everyone who sees the film will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it. We worked hard but laughed and had fun equally as much.

—Joshua Kennedy, director of House of the Gorgon, met you at Monster Bash. How did he convince you to come out of “retirement” for the film?
—That was an easy decision for me! I met him five years ago and we have been doing funny little music videos every year since. He’s become a dear friend and I did not even hesitate when he asked - especially when I got to work with my beloved Caroline Munro, Christopher Neame and Veronica Carlson! And even Caroline's daughter, Georgina Dugdale!
—How was it like filming House of the Gorgon alongside your fellow Hammer stars: Christopher Neame, Veronica Carlson, and Caroline Munro?
—The experience can only be described as MAGICAL. I absolutely loved every minute and can hardly wait to be at our London premiere in January!

—What was your experience like filming House of the Gorgon?
—Absolutely amazing...I've always wanted to work with Caroline and Martine. Joshua Kennedy is a remarkable young man. A creative guru...his energy and eagerness are boundless. I've never forget the "four leaves" that Josh used in one of the shots...these were leaves that Josh had personally obtained from Black Park in England when he was much younger, and he used them in the scene. His reverence for these details shows how much he is devoted to Hammer. "House of the Gorgon" is an experience I'll cherish forever.
—House of the Gorgon is a tribute to Hammer Films. Having actually worked for the company, how did this shooting film compare to the real thing?
—Well, you can't really compare them. Hammer had the advantage of having better sets and production elements...."House of the Gorgon" has the right atmosphere, and one has to admire what Josh was able to create with what he had to work with...his imagination is limitless.
