 Presente desde 1942, protagonista de películas importantes del cine alemán, como CANARIS (El Almirante Canaris-1954), de espionaje y DIE TAUSEND AUGEN DES DR. MABUSE (Los Mil Ojos del Dr. Mabuse-1960), donde encarnó el rol diabólico de Mabuse (lo haría en cuatro películas más). Preiss encarnó a jerarcas nazis como Kesselring en ANZIO (La Batalla por Anzio-1968); a Erwin Rommel en RAID ON ROMMEL (Comando en el Desierto-1971); a Von Rundstedt en A BRIDGE TOO FAR (Un Puente Demasiado Lejos-1977); al Mariscal Jodl en IKE (1979) miniserie norteamericana; al General von Brauschitz en THE WINDS OF WAR (Vientos de Guerra-1983), otra miniserie bélica.
