 La carrera de Ernest Palmer se inicia en los años '10, pero es reconocida recién en 1941 cuando gana (conjuntamente con Ray Rennahan) un premio Oscar por BLOOD AND SAND (Sangre y Arena-1941). En los '20 había trabajado junto a Frank Borzage, y durante los '30 y '40 permaneció en la Fox. A lo largo de los '50 trabajó también en Inglaterra. Obtuvo nominaciones por mejor fotografía por FOUR DEVILS (1928), STREET ANGEL (1929) y BROKEN ARROW (1950).
